Given the singular focus on Google Analytics, the authors have structured a superior book to either of those from Avinash Kaushik (`Web Analytics 2.0: The Art of Online Accountability and Science of Customer Centricity', and `Web Analytics: An Hour a Day'). I would recommend this book, both for the Google Analytics user as well as for those using other tools. I anticipate this proving a valuable reference as I experiment more. There remains room to further develop the analysis of offline marketing and sales when in unison with online endeavors.

A comprehensive, actionable guide to the analytics world, August 3, 2010

I found this book to be a great read. The authors make much of the difficult analytics jargon easily digestible, and provide a clear plan to grow your online business. Unlike some of the other titles out there, this book limits the fluff.

In particular, the case studies used were largely relevant to me, and gave a clear sense of how analytics can truly change the game. Bread and butter areas like Adwords and Adsense subject matter carefully drilled down into succinct lessons that anybody can implement. I also appreciated the content on Google trends, a powerful and free tool that seems under-utilized.

The tradeoff with this book's comprehensiveness was ultimately that some of the content wasn't directly relevant to my clothing business, but the authors established a cogent organization to navigate the subject matter.

All in all, this book became my bible on analytics, and I expect to continue to reference it as I optimize my site and ultimately conversions.

#1: This book is extremely helpful if you're a hardcore data analyst who needs more business acumen, or a true marketer who needs a better handle on the technical aspects of web analytics.
#2: The section on using web analytics to measure, optimize, and hold accountable your SEO is very strong.
#3: The sections on tracking and optimizing offline marketing (print, billboard, tv, radio, etc.) are a much needed reminder that marketers need to be tracking everything, online or otherwise. And, that Google Analytics can be that "central marketing dashboard" type of tool if set up correctly.

Like many of us running small businesses, I have no choice but to come up with ads, brochures, press releases, etc. myself. This book gives me a systematic way of doing so, and I credit it with saving me a lot of money in missteps. If you follow the guidelines and checklists carefully, you will probably produce advertising and promotional material that at the very least avoids being amateurish, and will probably sell some products. I like that it concisely gives an overview over each of the areas of advertising and promotion. It explains insider terms without being condescending. Any Gripes? If I could afford the "test" runs of 5000 mailing pieces before I made my "real" mailing of many times that, I wouldn't be reading this book now would I?! But I am probably making excuses for not following their advice on testing advertising, and would be better off if I followed it. The book has been a great help in building my business, and I consult it frequently.

Great book for the entire interactive team, March 28, 2011

The challenge with the new interactive department is you have to span multiple disciplines with a lean staff. While each person has their own expertise, everyone needs to understand the user cycle. Search, Analytics and Website User Testing are three different beasts altogether but they are inextricably linked.

This is a mandatory read for any one in my department. The author starts broad in each section and then gets very specific. Experts in each discipline can still learn some new tricks, but the benefit is really for those people in cross functions. I came into this book very learned in AdWords, intermediate skill in Analytics and very little knowledge in Optimizer. I found each section had tons of actionable info.

At the end of the book the author spends time talking about how to put these tactics within an overall strategy. Executing the game plan is the tough part. All the head knowledge in the world doesn't mean a thing if it doesn't fit into the high paced, campaign oriented world that is the interactive department. The last few chapters under the heading of execution bring these three pieces of the pie together.

Great book. Keep them coming!

Technology changing at the speed of light has left this one time relevant book in the dust. After trudging through the first 83 pages I am about to dispose of this book indefinitely. It's still 2011 as I write this, less than 2 years since published. So much has changed on Google Adwords in the last year that it is very difficult to compare what the author has written with what is actually displayed on Adwords. Save your money and frustration by purchasing a more up to date book. Also, if you are looking for a good way to optimize your campaigns don't waste your money here. You will learn more just by reading Google Adwords Help on their site.

Google AdWords can be a powerful addition to your marketing strategy, but a confusing one. Teixeira's book is a good introduction to AdWords, but overwhelms with details and underwhelms with strategy. He does, however, a good job leading us step-by-step through AdWords as a software platform.

The book does not have enough information or guidance on keyword strategy, how your ads should interface with what you as a company sell or do. Nor is it connected to your SEO strategy, yet these things should work together.

On a technical level, I was disturbed by the discussion on 'broad match.' 'Broad match' is often misunderstood by most of my clients; putting in 'dog boarding' may yield results not just for the words 'dog' and 'boarding' but also 'puppy' 'animal' and even cat. Few seems to get this, and Teixeria doesn't tell you this hugely important point, nor how to find out the true keyword matches once you are running. I have had many clients waste thousands of dollars on broad match!

Strategically, the most important issue I teach students in my classes on SEO and Social Media (Google Jason McDonald to find me), is that AdWords should be part and parcel of your SEO strategy - get what you can get for free, first, and build AdWords on top of it. This book doesn't embed AdWords into a strategic perspective; for that you are on your own.

So in sum, it's a good book on AdWords, but not a great book, and it won't make my shelf of recommendations for my students in AdWords and SEO, either online and in San Francisco.

Rubbish and outdated. I have several website with # position on Google. There was nothing new here, and the content was 1990ish. Otherwise out of date. There are better books on Amazon with more substance.
